Central Plaza at Los Angeles Chinatown before 2011 parade

Chinese New Year Parade in Los Angeles is a photographer’s dream!

Gold Dragon head 2011 Chinese New Year ParadeArmed with my camera I went to the New Year’s Parade in Chinatown in Los Angeles a few of years ago and had a terrific time taking photos of both the people in the parade and those watching it.  The photo at the top of the page is the Central Plaza in Chinatown in Los Angeles where hundreds of people waited for the 2011 parade to begin.

Rather than write about it I’m simply going to post some photos from that day, starting with a huge Chinese Golden dragon head, of course.  Notice the street light banner behind the dragon, above: it looks like a red hand shadow image of a rabbit, for this Year of the Rabbit. The image, below, is of the Chinese American Association which is usually near the head of the parade carrying U.S. flags.

And here are images of people participating in and attending the parade.

As expected, the mayor and many officials rode on cars in the parade and this group of LAPD officers made their rounds on bikes. In years since this 2011 parade, the LAPD has done a very flashy, very loud motorcycle formation to lead the parade, but back in 2011 things were quieter.
