The Angels Flight funicular rail line–the shortest railway in the world–runs for one block right up Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles. Originally built in the early 1900s, it eventurally was closed, then moved and reopened most recently in 2010. It is fun to ride and only costs 50 cents.
Today one of the cars slipped off the rail about half-way down, but no one was injured. Back in 2001 there was an accident where one person was killed. When it re-opened in 2010, new safety features had been installed. According to news reports this evening, no one knows exactly why it happened yet. I wonder if the utterly blistering heat we are experiencing played a role in this derailment. Anyway, Angels Flight is closed now. I will post an update when things change.
