After I left Pershing Square (see previous post) I decided to go to L.A. Live to see the ice-skating rink installed for the holiday season. I came across one surprise after another on my way there.
First, just down the street from Pershing Square a bank had an menorah in their window next to the Christmas tree. Diversity is good.
A block or so away, I came across a photographer shooting a young woman perched on a low ledge. Photo shoots are common in L.A., but this one was different. Usually women don’t perch like that in such odd clothes so I suspect it was an Instagram shoot.
At the Pico Metro station I discovered that the art work commissioned for the station was in the ‘roof’. The artist who created these panels also did ones at the Indiana Metro station.
The next surprise was the crowd of people going to Staples Center–all Kings hockey fans. My surprise was because I knew there was a Clippers’ game at 7:30. The workers at Staples must have installed the Clippers’ floor over the Kings’ ice at lightning speed. That’s how it works, BTW, to allow three teams to play in the same arena in the winter seasons for each sport. The ice is always there. Workers install the correct floor — Clippers or Lakers– over the ice.
At L.A. Live the ice rink was slick and beautiful and there were very few skaters, almost all adults. After the Kings’ game I’m sure more people came to skate.
Now about Santa. Yes, there is a Santa at L.A. Live, but he, unlike the one at Pershing Square, seems to be for adults. And a professional photographer was taking photos.
As I made my way back to the Pico Metro station I saw two amazing murals on two adjacent walls. Christmas in Los Angeles has its own unique style!
