Rodriguez placed his hands in the fresh concrete with help from concrete expert Sassan Shakoori while an employee of Vroman’s looks on.

Rodriguez, the 2014 Los Angeles Poet Laureate, author, bookstore owner, former gang member and community activist became the third author to be added to Vroman’s bookstore Walk of Fame.

Like Lisa See and Michael Connelly in previous years, Rodriguez placed his handprints in concrete outside this independent bookstore in 2017.

Oops Rodriguez spelled it wrong
Step Two, after the handprints, is for the author to sign his/her name. I guess he was nervous because he mispelled his name. The error, however, was quickly caught and fixed.

“Written in concrete” didn’t mean permanent in this case. Shakoori erases the spelling error and then Rodriguez finished signing his name. Shakoori is most noted for his work on the star’s footprints in front of the Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

And what would a historic event like this be without a delicious cake!
