Frida Kahlo altar Pasadena
This altar at the Crowned Studio honored family members and included a Frida Kahlo doll. Free face-painting was offered, too.

In the 2017 Day of the Dead event in Old Town Pasadena there were altars for a number of celebrities, as well as pets and family members who had passed away.  Unlike the large altars in Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles most of the ones here were small, taking up a corner of each store and restaurant on the altar tour.

The community altar entitled “Wings of the Dead” was designed by Sonia Romero. It is covered with golden orange monarch butterflies.

In addition to continuing that Mexican tradition, the IPIC theater gave away pumpkins to be decorated–honoring an old American tradition.  Pasadena  loves traditions and history.

The Carrie Fisher/Star Wars altar at Harlowe’s was one of 2 altars honoring her.

In a venue called Indiana Colony — the original name for Pasadena–there was a altar honoring the late singer, Selena.
Even fictional characters get their due. This altar in Juice Served Here honors the character Littlefinger in Game of Thrones.
Sugarfina altar for pets
I made a point of going to Sugarfina candy store hoping they would have sugar skulls available for sale. Sadly they did not. They were offering free samples of chocolate caramels. Their altar honored dead pets.
