3 monks at Sri Lanka Festival Pasadena

Sri Lankan dancers, Buddhist monks and Saving Ganesh at Sri Lanka Day in Pasadena

dancers at Sri Lanka Day 2016
This dance troupe was the first to go onstage and performed a graceful ‘welcoming dance’ for visiting dignitaries.

Last year the Sri Lanka Day festival moved from Santa Monica where, their website claimed, they had 100,000 visitors.  Well, there were not that many at the new venue in Pasadena’s Paseo Colorado plaza, although I arrived and left early so more people may have come later.  It turned out to be quite unlike most of the street festivals I have attended around Los Angeles.

Miss Sri Lanka USA
Two young ladies were identified as Miss Sri Lanka U.S.A. I assume one was for last year and the other for 2016.

Of course, there was a Miss Sri Lanka U.S.A..  In fact there were two of them. And dancers?  Yes, there were dancers. But not many booths and none of them held the ‘usual suspects’ of the street vendor world. A booth honoring Buddha? Yes, there was one of those.  Another booth with a big banner reading “SavingGanesh.org” supported an elephant preservation effort. There was even one selling beachfront condos in Sri Lanka!

And as for the ubiquitous food trucks?  They all must have been at the Lotus Festival in Echo Park.  Instead three booths served Sri Lankan food and one old-fashioned ice cream truck was parked on Colorado Blvd. near the children’s play area.

The best thing about this event: after all the bloodshed in that country recently, Sri Lanka Day was a wonderful example of how people of various backgrounds can live together.

Here is some of what I saw:

Three Buddhist monks at Sri Lanka Day
Three Buddhist monks took a break in the shade during the Sri Lanka Day festival.
Golden Buddha statue at Sri Lanka Day 2016
A golden statue of Buddha stood guard in front of this booth manned by two monks.
Saving the elephants booth at Sri Lanka Day
‘Save the Elephants’ was the theme of this booth. I assume that some of the profits from the sale of Sri Lankan goods went to the ‘SavingGanesh’ organization. I didn’t ask, however. Lord Ganesha is the elephant-headed Hindu god who is also honored by Buddhists and Jains.
Balloon arch to kids play area
Naturally there was a kids’ space. In the background is the dome for Pasadena City Hall.
Sri Lanka Day at Paseo Colorado
The city of Pasadena is trying to bring more activities to the city and specifically to Paseo Colorado. The Paseo Colorado was originally a combination shopping mall and high-rise apartment complex, but Macys left and new condos are being built on the old Macys site.
