Dance dance dance (sweat!) at the National Dance Day in Los Angeles

It was hotter than the proverbial pistol at the National Dance Day event in the Mark Taper Plaza last Saturday.  If you hadn’t heard, this brand new celebration was the brain-child of the producer of the TV show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and there were similar events held all across the nation.

It all began with a warm-up lead by Nathan Tresoras, one of the show’s winners.

While his intention may have been self-serving–to get more publicity for the show–it turned out to be a lot of fun. Hundreds of people, mostly women and the Australian Special Olympics team, were dancing in the sunlight, having a great time and sweating like crazy. Unfortunately, the water they provided was used up all too quickly. I left after an hour, feeling very dehydrated.

I wish I had had a video camera to record it, but instead here are a few still photos. Oh, the producer announced that there would be similar free dance events held each Friday at the Mark Taper Plaza between now and the end of August, 2015.  So the fun continues.

These dancers were really getting into it. The young man in the white t-shirt had a stiff black Mohawk haircut. It’s hard to see in this photo.

Another winner, Nathan Tresoras, got the show rolling with some basic moves.

Not everyone in the Taper plaza was interested in dancing. This woman walks right by the Peace on Earth sculpture on her way to someplace else.
