Street photography from Mexico City at ArtNight in Pasadena

Federico Gama street photos
Federico Gama is especially interested in taking photos of young indigenous people, the Mazahuas, who are adapting to a new life in Mexico City.

I went to the spring 2017 ArtNight in Pasadena last Friday and at the Armory Center for the Arts discovered a photographer, Federico Gama, whose work was new to me.  Checking his bio, it turns out he is very well known and published in Mexico and elsewhere.   You can see some more of his work on instagram.

I have since learned that this exhibition is a kind of “sneak preview” of the Pacific Standard Time program developed by the Getty.  The official launch of PST will be in September 2017.

ArtNight is a twice a year occurrence in Pasadena and I usually go to one or two of the more than a dozen art, music, drama and history venues offering free admission.

The Armory Center, which is really located in an old National Guard armory, is a quirky venue in Old Town Pasadena: part gallery, part arts education for children and adults.

On ArtNight I also went to the Pasadena Museum of California Art.  Their exhibition was nice…interesting…one woodblock artist, one portrait painter and a group of experimental works by young artists.

Here are some more photos of the Armory Center and Gama’s works.

Both daytime and evening classes in the arts are offered at the Armory Center for the Arts. From upstairs I heard, then saw, a children’s after-school art class.
