See 40,000 bicylists at CicLAvia in Pasadena – Wow! Was it ever crowded!

40,000 bikers at CicLAvia Pasadena
40,000 bicylists turned out for CicLAvia in Pasadena in May 2015.

In the first CicLAvia outside of the city limits of Los Angeles, the crowds really turned out.  The Pasadena Police estimate that 40,000 cyclists were cycling–slowly I have to say–along Colorado Blvd. from Old Town Pasadena through the Playhouse District to Pasadena City College. For the first time in about three years I decided to ride my trusty old Trek bike on the 3.5 mile route.  I have to thank the helpful people at Pasadena Cyclery for getting my bike back in working order.  And thanks, too, to Trader Joe’s for handing out free bottled water near the Lake Ave. Hub.

A stylish chromed custom bike with its owner standing by near the Lake Ave. Hub.  A bit of low-rider aesthetic here.

The next CicLAvia will be in Culver City and Venice on August 9th.  And If you would like to see photos of the Amgen Tour of California final stage at the Rose Bowl earlier this month go here.

Mostly I rode along with the other cyclists, but along the route I stopped every so often to snap some pictures and here they are in no special order.

Pie 'n Burger food truck
The famous Pie ‘n Burger cafe sent its food truck. The Food Channel declared their burger one of the 5 best in the U.S. The truck was parked next to the Hub at Pasadena City College.
Pacific Asia Museum booth
Only-in-Pasadena: the Pacific Asia Art Museum had a booth at the Memorial Park Hub.  I particularly like the goat sculpture.

mandatory dismount zone.
Every few blocks there was a mandatory dismount zone. Not much chance to build up speed on this route.
yellow shoes
OMG! Look at those shoes! Not exactly traditional cycling footwear.  I hadn’t noticed them when I took the photo of what appears to be a collapsible bike.  Cute hat, too.
