Shopping and seeing the sights in Chinatown

In the main polaza in Chinatown
A view of tourists taking photos in the main plaza in Chinatown in Los Angeles.

An acquaintance of my daughter-in-law moved into an affordable senior-living high rise apartment on the edge of Chinatown in Los Angeles.  My daughter-in-law suggested that I check it out–her friend loves living there, in part because it is so close to downtown.  Downtown Los Angeles is very hot these days — especially with the under 30 crowd.

Another view of the main plaza. The children’s rides are new.

Well, the rents being charged for the senior apartments are certainly a bargain, but I had doubts about living in that area so I took the Metro to Chinatown and began to walk around.  I started along Spring St. where the Chinatown Swap Meet building is and I found many more colorful bargains–although not necessarily for things I typically purchase.  In the end I decided that living on the edge of Chinatown is not for me.

Here is some of what I saw:

Woman and god in Chinatown
A woman on her way to a shop in the swap meet building passes by this shrine.
insense in Chinatown
Stacks and stacks of incense and the owner was definitely  not happy when I began taking photos. At a nearby shop I was told: “No pictures. No pictures.”
T shirt sale
Best price in town for T-shirts
kimonos for sale
Chinese made versions of Japanese kimonos.
dresses in Chinatown Los Angeles
Some old-fashioned, some new interpretations.
women buying grapes from steet vendor
On my way home I passed by some women buying fresh grapes for a $1 a pound out of the back of a pick-up truck.
