Wilshire Blvd., a main cross-city street in L.A., was closed to cars today and bicylists were free to go anywhere along the way from One Wilshire, downtown, to Fairfax, a distance of six miles.
I started my trip, however, at the Fillmore Gold Line Station in Pasadena where I was invited to join four young people who were taking their bicycles on the Metro to participate in CicLAvia. I declined their invitation and took their picture instead.
We all disembarked downtown at Union Station and I lost track of them when I went downstairs to transfer to the Red Line which would take me to MacArthur Park, a mid-point between the two ends of the CicLAvia route.
While waiting on the platform for the Red Line Metro train, who should I see but a man in a Batman costume, no doubt one the the characters who hang out in Hollywood Blvd. earning their income from photos taken by tourists. The Red Line goes right into Hollywood.
At MacArthur Park I took a lot of other photos, too, of cyclists of all ages and sizes. I also saw the ‘Sunday Market on Alvarado Street’, which I will write about in the next post. The stark contrast between the affluent bicylists merrily pedalling along Wilshire and the desperate people selling at the informal market was astonishing.
Anyway… here are a few CicLAvia photos from April 2014. The next CiLAvia will be on October 5th, 2014.
